OPSR Research Initiatives

In addition to providing behavioral health programs, training, and consultation to our clients in the field, OPSR consistently works behind the scenes on a host of research projects. Indeed, prevention research is central to our mission and work. This work supported by federal as well as state grants focuses not only on understanding any given problem, but on using this understanding to prevent the occurrence of this problem among the target populations.

OPSR therefore aims to build partnerships with service providers, educators, community leaders, faith-based institutions, and clinic-based organizations to improve the mental health and quality of life for underserved and highly vulnerable members of society. We are involved in the development, testing, and dissemination of effective, scientifically sound, and culturally appropriate behavioral health interventions and best practices.

Recent research focuses include:

  • Youth interpersonal violence
  • Violence victimization
  • STDs and HIV
  • Unwanted/unplanned pregnancy
  • Substance abuse
  • Access to, retention of, and improved outcomes for mental health treatment of underserved African-American and Latino populations
  • Dissemination of promising and validated preventive interventions
