Children’s Crisis Intervention Services

The Children’s Crisis Intervention Services (CCIS) and the Acute Psychiatric Service (APS), are components of the Crisis Services unit at University Behavioral HealthCare (UBHC), which is the behavioral health division of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). As part of a comprehensive mental health system, CCIS strives to provide excellent psychiatric services to youth who require an emergency level of care.

What are the services provided?

CCIS offers crisis intervention that includes 1) assessing the immediate emotional difficulties, usually problems with behavior or mood; 2) exploring precipitating factors or events; 3) using therapeutic techniques to stabilize functioning; 4) making recommendations for follow-up mental health services. When psychiatric hospitalization are indicated, referrals for admission will be made.

When will I be seen?

This is a “walk-in” service. Generally you will be seen on a first come, first serve basis, but as occurs in medical emergency rooms, sometimes a triage process is used to determine extent of urgency.

Who will I see?

A mental health clinician will do the initial assessment. When indicated, an on-call psychiatrist will be contacted for consultation.
